Printers & label printing
Manage printers per workstation, install SimpliPrint for direct printing and assign document types to printers specifically
Under Administration → Printers you manage the printers at your tenant's workstations and set which printer is used for which document type (invoice, delivery note, receipt, shipping label, …). So that SimpliServ can print directly to physical devices – without the browser's print dialog – a small helper program runs on each workstation: SimpliPrint.
How it works
SimpliServ runs in the browser and can't easily access a connected printer directly from there. SimpliPrint is a local desktop service installed on the respective computer. The browser talks to SimpliPrint over a local connection, which passes the print jobs on to the physical device.
- If SimpliPrint is installed and running, print jobs with a printer assignment are sent directly to the device – including paper format, tray and number of copies.
- If SimpliPrint is not detected, all print jobs fall back to the normal browser print dialog. So the module stays usable even without installation, just without direct printing.
SimpliPrint must be installed on every computer that should print directly. The detected printers and the print-service availability are always per workstation – they hang off the computer you're currently sitting at.
At the top of the page, a status banner shows whether SimpliPrint was detected on this computer (SimpliPrint detected / SimpliPrint not detected). Via Re-check you can trigger detection again after a fresh installation.
Install SimpliPrint
Open the print-service page
Click Install SimpliPrint in the status banner or open → Print service directly. SimpliServ detects your operating system automatically and suggests the matching installer (Windows / macOS / Linux) of the latest version.
Download the installer
Download the suggested file or choose a different platform or architecture (Intel / x86_64, ARM64, Apple Silicon) under All downloads. For each installer, the file size and – for integrity checking – a SHA-256 checksum are shown, which you can copy with a click.
Run the installer
The Windows installers are currently not signed. If SmartScreen blocks the launch, click More info and then Run anyway.
Check availability
Go back to Administration → Printers and click Re-check in the status banner. If SimpliPrint detected is shown, direct printing is ready to use.
If you need an older version, you'll find it on the print-service page under Earlier versions – collapsible per release including the associated installers.
Add a printer
Only once a printer is created in SimpliServ can you assign it to a document type. There are two ways.
Detect automatically (recommended)
If SimpliPrint is running, the Detected on this computer section appears. SimpliPrint lists all printers known to the workstation – with detected capabilities like driver, resolution (dpi), supported paper formats and trays.
Have printers detected
Via Refresh you reload the list of detected devices. If they're turned on and visible to your operating system, they're shown here.
Add with one click
Click Add on the device you want. SimpliServ takes over the system name, guesses a matching type based on the driver (e.g. label, register receipt, laser), sets a workstation label and chooses a sensible default paper format. Already-created devices are marked Added.
Add manually
Via Add printer manually you create a printer via a form – useful when SimpliPrint isn't (yet) running or the printer is at another workstation. The dialog offers the following fields:
- Display name – the name shown in SimpliServ.
- System name – the exact printer name reported by the operating system. Via Detect available printers you can select it directly from this computer.
- Type – laser, inkjet, thermal, register receipt, label, dot matrix, payment terminal or other.
- Workstation label – which computer/workstation the printer hangs off.
- Default paper format – e.g.
A4. - Open the cash drawer automatically – opens the connected cash drawer when a receipt is printed (for POS/register printers, see POS / register).
- Active – inactive printers are hidden from the scenario assignment.
In the printer list, each row can be expanded to view the reported capabilities (paper formats, trays). Via the action menu you can edit or delete a printer.
Via the payment terminal type you also create card terminals here, to which the register sends the amount automatically. Instead of the printer options, the IP address and port of the ZVT interface then appear – see Card terminal (ZVT).
When deleting a printer, all scenario assignments that use it are also removed. Affected document types then fall back to the browser print dialog again.
Scenario assignments
In the Scenario assignments section you set which active printer is used for which document type. Per row (scenario) you choose:
- Printer – the target device, or — Not assigned — for the browser print dialog.
- Paper format – printer default or a format reported by the device.
- Tray – automatic or a specific paper tray.
- Copies – the number of printouts (1 to 99).
Changes are saved automatically as soon as you make a selection – there's no separate save button. The paper format and tray selection only become active once a printer is assigned, and follow the capabilities reported by the device.
Assignable scenarios are: invoice, proposal, estimate, delivery note, reminder, order tag, voucher, receipt, register receipt (thermal), online-payment receipt, cash-movement receipt, day-end, interim report, cash report, service registration, shipping label and customer-order ticket.
That way you can put e.g. shipping label on a label printer and register receipt (thermal) on the register printer, while invoice and delivery note go to the A4 laser printer.
Permissions
print.use– a prerequisite to even see the Printers module and the print-service page.print.manage– needed to create, edit, delete printers and change scenario assignments. Without this permission, all fields are read-only.
You manage roles and permissions under Users & roles.
